Among the “the Four Treasures(bell, drum, cloud panel, and wooden fish),” one is the wooden fish, which is found at Seon temples in Korea. It is a wooden log hollowed out in the shape of a fish, which is beat with sticks on the inside of a long crevasse on the underside. It is a means for the creatures living in water to be called to hear the Buddha’s teachings in the morning and evening ceremonies. There are two kinds of wooden fish in terms of appearance. One is a faithful rendering of a fish. The other has the body of a fish but the head of a dragon. As the eyes of a fish never close, the fish is meant to remind people to always keep their hearts and minds awake and so to drive away laziness.
